FROM MARVIN D. ARNPRIESTER . . .
The tragic situation in Haiti continues to both baffle and amaze me.
Baffle in the sense of being so overwhelming, with a sense of helplessness and bewilderment in how to best help in making a systemic difference. So many people in this world live every day on the edge, just trying to find enough food and shelter for now. Then the next day they get up and do it all over again. And tragically, leaders and politicians profit from keeping the system the way it is and has been. I am praying God will grant wisdom and insight to those in power and those caught in the system, because in every crisis there is an opportunity if we can see and seize it. May our giving for relief become a way to re-life.
Amaze in the sense of the continuing miraculous stories of life in the midst of so much tragic death and destruction. I marvel and give thanks for the giving and tenacity of those involved in the whole rescue effort. Persons who risked their lives to save the lives of others whom they have never met nor will ever know. Amazing and wonderful!
I was moved to tears Sunday morning when 3 year old Kayley came up to me and gave me an envelope on which she had made designs in various colors and printed her name. She told me it was for Haiti. Her parents told me she had heard the news reports and told them money could help the girls and others. So she emptied her piggy bank to help the people in Haiti. She also reached into her Daddy’s pocket to get some change. I was deeply touched and could only respond in the moment with a hug and the awareness that truly a child will lead them. Thank you friends for your response of over $5,600 for the relief effort to date.
I extend you an invitation to join with other laity of our church in a very important congregational meeting Sunday, January 31, 4:00 p.m. at the church. Dr. Dan Meyers with Master Plan Ministries, comes to lead us as we begin the process for a Capital Stewardship Campaign. He was our consultant back in 1996. Come join us, as we learn more and invite your input and insights.
We are doing this because we need to:
1) tuck point and seal coat the sanctuary exterior to stop further damage to our
building,
2) pay the $300,000 parking lot note at the bank,
3) build our Endowment Fund,
4) take care of miscellaneous items (i.e.) sanctuary updating, carpet and various
floor coverings and our 10% account.
FROM BOB FOLKERS. . .
Give help, share your life, without the goal of personal gain.
Several years ago I invested several days of my life to work with other volunteers in a project sponsored by Habitat for Humanity. Those were good days in so many ways, and if I ever get the chance to do that kind of work again, I will do it. This experience was not based upon meeting new friends or being honored just because you were there.
That time spent helping to build a home for others, reinforced a conviction I have that until this sort of volunteering - simply arranging to help one another with no higher good or personal gain - begins to dominate the spirit of the citizens of our country, our community, and our church, our problems will continue to escalate to the point of being unsolvable.
As I reflect on those days, the best thing about them was there was no sense of power present, no one trying to control anyone else, no attention-getting behavior, no schemes to control, simply persons working together to build a home for a family in need, to salvage a neighborhood, and to create a bit of self esteem and community respect.
Sometimes I have to deal with the sinful side of power, but those days were not that way. How refreshing it was!
The will to volunteer to help with a project or people in need and to do so without any goals of personal gain are both of experiences that rise right out of the New Testament and the life of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
I am convinced the Christian way of life is crucial for our future as a society. The church is anchored in the will to volunteer. To do the task without gaining power over others is important. As the church exists in this way, only then does it become an effective witness in the world. If the church does not anchor itself in the will to volunteer and help others and refuses to play the games of power for personal gain, its witness to the world is null and void.
By the way - everyone I met during those days of working to build a house, were members of a Christian community. Indeed, there is hope! So when you are asked to volunteer, do it for the sake of God’s Kingdom and not your personal gain.
The Joy Continues.

CHURCH HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS . . .
There are conflicting stories as to where Henry DeLong was converted, but whether it was in Council Bluffs or Macomb, Illinois, he began a life of Christian devotion that March night in 1858.
Henry found a job as a well digger. He also devoted long hours to Bible study. In 1860 he became licensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church. Often he preached every night and three times on Sunday.
That same year, on August 18, he divorced Amantha Miller DeLong with whom he had two daughters.
September 24, 1862, Henry married Sophronia E. Whitcomb who was a charter member of Broadway Church. Together they had eight children. The first three boys died before age three. The fourth boy died at age nine. Henry and Sophronia were married for more than sixty-two years until her death in 1925.
On November 9, 1864 Henry served in the Iowa Light Artillery until the end of the Civil War, being discharged October, 1865. He was stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas. While there, he earned money washing his comrades shirts for 5 cents each. He saved $200. When he returned to Council Bluffs he borrowed $50 and for $250 purchased the land where the Ocean Wave Saloon once stood. The saloon had been struck by lightning and burned to the ground September, 1861. Henry donated the land to the Methodist Church to be used for church purposes forever.
