Our mission: Ever seeking, serving and growing as the family of God with unconditional love and acceptance!

FROM MARVIN D. ARNPRIESTER . . .

After the activities had concluded Wednesday evening, Judy came into my office and shared with me that 10 new teenagers had participated in the Youth ministry programs that evening. Because of the good things happening at Broadway, youth are inviting other youth to join them. It tells us there is an attitude of care, concern and acceptance by our youth and sponsors which welcomes others.

That attitude is also at work in other areas of our church ministry and life. New people continue to visit, then to participate and then join us in membership. Sunday morning we will welcome persons as members at Broadway. Other folk are planning to become members later. It is wonderful and exciting. At the same time we are also aware that some have fallen by the wayside. So it is important for all of us to continually reach out to each other in concern and care so no one is forgotten. Even as we welcome new folk, let’s remember to care for and pay attention to each other.

Sunday afternoon 60 persons gathered to meet with Dr. Dan Myers from Master Plan Ministries regarding the process for a Capital Stewardship Campaign. Following Dr. Myers’ presentation those present filled out a survey which was compiled to identify persons for various responsibilities in carrying out the campaign between now and the end of April. Dr. Myers will also use the financial figures people indicated on their response forms and the giving pattern figures of our church for the past 3 years. He will then be able to share with us the amount we might reasonably expect from our Campaign. That is when our goal(s) will be set.

I respond to some questions being asked. Why now? Why in these economic times? There are three reasons: (1) Because we need to pay off the $320,000 note at the bank, (2) We need to take care of the building which has been bequeathed to us by those who have gone before, (3) We need to build up our endowment fund so the building upkeep can be paid for from its proceeds, so the money from the Annual Budget can go to support mission and ministry each year.

When does Growing Through Grace conclude? It will conclude May 30 as giving for the new campaign begins June 1.

Some have continued to give at the same level we gave during the 3 years of the Growing Through Grace campaign when our pledge time ended to help pay off the bank note. Thank you!

Do we have Broadway members who are unemployed? The answer is yes. We are supporting them with our prayers, encouragement and leads for jobs.

Why not take it in small bites? Because we need to do the exterior work this summer to avoid further and more costly damages later. Many have told us they would rather lump all the needs together and not keep coming back again and again piece meal.

Remember - This campaign is not an effort to cause undue hardship or guilt for anyone. It is an effort to be faithful in our stewardship of resources given us by God, by those who have gone before us and for those who will come after us.

FROM PASTOR RUBEN MENDOZA . . .

IT IS A BLESSING TO GIVE

In this life, there is no one poorer than someone who cannot give to someone else who has need of more necessities to sustain life. God’s Word invites us to give, and tells us that it is better to give than to receive. Giving is a decision we can make because of the love God has placed in each one of us.

One of the clearest examples regarding the importance of giving in the Bible is from Matthew 25:35-40. “I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me.” The righteous will then answer him, “When, Lord, did we ever see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you in our homes, or naked and clothe you? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?” The King will reply, “I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me!”

In this passage, we find that all we do to others or for others is as though we do it to God himself. That is why it is such a great blessing to give.

Today in the world there are so many problems caused by hunger, war and natural disasters that create great needs for humanity. The most recent, of course, is the tragedy in Haiti. Each one of these needs that continue to exist is yet another opportunity for us to give and receive the blessing of God.

Were you married at Broadway UMC? Your Mom? Your Grandparents? We are looking for wedding pictures taken at weddings performed at BUMC in the last 160 years. We will be honoring “Brides at Broadway” in June as celebration of the 160th anniversary of the church. Bring the picture to the church and it will be displayed in the showcase in the Narthex during the month. Be sure to label the picture with date, name and current phone number of the person bringing the picture so we can return them. On June 26 we will have a tea and style show with wedding dresses past and present, but more about that later.

CHURCH HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS . . .

In 1866 Broadway Methodist Episcopal Church was built on the site given by Henry DeLong. It was replaced twenty-five years later by our present church building.

When Henry gave the land for a church, certain business interests were infuriated. It was the beginning of a raging feud with his former cronies. Henry launched successful campaigns compelling the local officials to obey and enforce the laws regulating liquor establishments. He was attacked in newspaper columns as being a crank, insane, and accused of numerous crimes. Eventually the Daily Nonpareil wrote as for his being crazy and insane that “...one living up to the Christian requirements would be so called.” The editorial continued “...not a citizen of Council Bluffs is so enthusiastic, brave and devoted to the real good and well being of this city as Henry DeLong.”

He continued as a missionary and circuit rider. He especially worked with and for the poor and down-trodden. He and his wife founded several missions and were often seen going door-to door collecting clothing and other items for the poor in the community. Henry continued his mission work into the 1900's.

Henry and his wife Sophronia established the DeLong Girls Industrial School. Religion was a big part of the curriculum along with sewing. Sophronia had been a seamstress, so the girls made dresses for themselves. The school responsibilities became so demanding the DeLongs eventually had to give up other mission work.

Although Henry never preached at Broadway Methodist church, he and his wife were life long members.
