Broadway’s Global Outreach includes participation in all three miles of the Rainbow Covenant giving, support of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) both financially and by assembling emergency kits, as well as the support of various missionary projects on Immigration, Economic Justice and to support a team in Liberia.
A team from Broadway traveled to Guatemala to provide medical assistance and to build a home for local residents. They also visited the Hogar del Niño Orphanage in Lemoa. All members provide continuing support to the work going on in Guatemala by collecting funds to support the orphanage as well as dedicating the committee’s share of next Quarterly Mission Offering to providing scholarships to elementary age school children and providing funds for the Incaparina Fund.
Last year enough money was raised for the Heifer Project to fund an entire ark. This Christmas we'll be offering a way for you to support this worthy cause by allowing you to make a donation in someone else's name as an alternative to a traditional gift. More information on this project will be available closer to Christmas time.
If you’d like more information on any of these projects and how you can help, please contact the chairperson of the Global Outreach committee. We are also interested in hearing proposals for other projects.
School Kits:
Currently we are assembling school kits to be distributed worldwide to school age children. 150 school bags, to hold school supplies for UMCOR, have been cut and are ready to be sewn. They are available at the church. Packs of cut bags (including instructions) are stored in the cabinet under the display case in the Centrex. Please feel free to help yourselves. If you have questions, call June Mitchell at 322-0638.
Incaparina Fund:
Incaparina is a nutritional supplement that is much loved in Guatemala! It is a powder substance you mix with 4 cups of water and let sit for 8 minutes. This gives families a drink fortified with protein and vitamins. It can also be added to other foods such as soups and stews to increase the nutritional benefit.
While the mission team was in Guatemala they would go to the "Incaparina shelf" at the grocery store daily and fill a shopping cart. About $500 of the money raised to support the trip went to this project. Each family that came to the clinic would then receive a package of incaparina to take home with them. Once the word was out, we had mothers and even children asking for it if we had forgotten.
The wife of Pastor Felix at the mission in Guatemala has a store where she sells Incaparina for about 1/3 its retail price. We have set up an Incaparina Fund to support this mission. Our goal is to send $100-200 per month so she can keep her shelves full. Would you like to help? If so, a check can be dropped in the collection plate or sent to the office. Just mark it “Incaparina Fund” and we will be glad to take care of it for you!
