This fall has been a busy time for the people of Broadway.  The church is really stepping up to help as our neighbors face some difficult times.

Longfellow Partnership

Teacher Treats for Conferences

We have already reported our successful school supply collection for the students at our partner school, Longfellow Elementary.  Since then BUMC treated the staff at Longfellow to a cup of hot cider as they headed into the parent/teacher conferences!

Soctober Success

Broadway's Sock Collection was a real sock-sess. We will be delivering 226 pairs of socks to Longfellow and other elementary schools. Because of the people of Broadway kids can enjoy their recess time with warm feet.

Ingathering for the United Methodist Committee on Relief

On November 1st, United Women in Faith delivered 60 school kits to Midwest Mission for distribution to student throughout the world by The United Methodist Committee on Relief.

Moving Forward in Faith

Conversations are happening in the church around ways we can help our neighbors during the government shutdown resulting in layoffs and SNAP and other benefit funding paused.  We will continue partnering with other non-profits like Philip's Cupboard, Care and Share, and Interfaith Response. Yet, we know that resources from our partners are not always available.  The need is growing. I am hearing that there are waiting lists at Project Response for those seeking rent and utility assistance. Pantries are not always open when those who need help can visit. Even as help is available, there are often barriers that make it difficult to attain assistance.

So, Broadway people gathered after worship last Sunday to brainstorm ways we can increase our outreach through stronger and expanded partnerships along with added efforts of our own.  You all are so generous with your time and your gifts as we prepare and plan for what may be next.

We have been gifted a few shelf stable food items and are packaging them into groceries for others.  However, what we have is what we can give.  At this time we are not planning to open a pantry, but for someone who finds their way here, we will offer what we can.

Ways you can help...

  • Continue your support of local food pantries through cash or shelf stable food donations. Places like Philip's Cupboard and Care and Share will be the first places we refer people to.
  • If you know of a resource for people that the church staff is unaware of, please make sure to share that with us.
  • Remember we are collecting new or gently used coats, gloves (not mittens), and hats during November for Longfellow Elementary students.  Bring your donations to the church and have the gloves and hats on the tree.  Coats can be left with the office.
  • Contribute to the church's Pastors Fund. Your donations help us meet people where they are to help as we can.
  • Donate shelf stable foods for our grocery bags. Consider non-expired items that create easy meals.  Canned items should have pop-top lids. Wouldn't it be lovely to also offer some small treats that can lighten someone's day?
  • Join the conversation.  Speak with Pastor Brian if you would like to work with the team.
  • Talk with Ms. Carey or Shane about helping prepare and clean up our Wednesday evening Community Meal.
  • Consider sponsoring a Wednesday night meal and pay for ingredients or provide sandwiches or pizza from a local restaurant. Again, arrange this with Carey or Shane.
  • And, don't forget the power of our prayers. Include our neighbors, our country, and our leaders in your daily time with God.

We will keep you informed as we develop outreach that makes a difference.

Peace,
Teresa
